cross-country in 2 weeks

We started our 2011 summer by going on a trip across the country.

On Saturday June 28th we left our home and started our much anticipated two week trip. Our trip was long but eventful and fun. It took us thru some exciting places and also thru some not so exciting places. We were able to visit a few US historical sites, LDS  sites plus sites that can only be described as scary, cool, weird, boring, ect but still we saw them.
We also left the country for a few hours during our trip. The kids loved saying they walked to Canada!
We do have a few regrets of things we missed. We tried to squeeze in as much as we could but couldn't do it all. Several times we had to choose between here and there which wasn't fun but maybe years down the road we can take another trip and do a bit more.
How much fun would it be to live back east! I think we would have something to do every weekend for the rest of our lives if we could live back there. We only scratched the surface of fun sightseeing and historical sites.
Driving is really the best way to see this beautiful country. An uncomfortable way to travel at times but still the best way to see a lot of it. We didn't have a lot of down time except while in the car and the kids took advantage of it every time by napping. It was fun to see the different vibes and smells of each state and city and of course the FOOD!
Along the way we bought postcards for the kids to fill out and mail to themselves back home, a souvenir. It was torture for the kids but someday they'll thank me I made them do it. I mailed the first two so they would be home the day we got back. Korbin's got lost and we still haven't seen it. Big bummer! Maddie got hers and was thrilled. As for the rest of the postcards I'll mail randomly during the summer.
During the trip we found the best ways to entertain the kids and the best ways to bribe them as well. Good stuff to know and we can't thank our friends enough for the great ideas. We played different fun games and we listened to Percy Jackson books 1-5. It was great entertainment and it lasted us until about an hour out of Grand Junction. Couldn't have timed it better myself. Madison now likes us to swear for things on the River Styx.
When Jason was a teenager his Grandparents Milligan took him on a trip similar to ours. Except in a motor home and it was a month long. He has fond childhood memories of expensive shoes/mall of America, humidity/Captain Crunch cereal, and of course fireflies. Although we didn't get to see fireflies like we were hoping for I hope our kids still have a lot of other fond memories from this trip like Jason has from his.

p.s. did you have any tornado warning while you were out there? i remember hearing them one night while we were in illinois or ohio, i think. my sister and i thought that there was a really horrible accident and that the sirens were ambulances. my mom and jared still talk about us having that conversation and how they didn't dare tell us what they really were. i am so glad they didn't tell me, it would have scared me to death.

Sounds like fun!
